I was seven and the sidewalk looked long and scary, but I eventually made my way to the front door. Creepy sounds were coming out from one of the windows. I knew it was a record, but that didn't calm me down. With a very shaky hand, I rang the door bell, and when the door opened there was nothing but darkness. Then out of nowhere a hand and arm wrapped in gauze came down from over the lower part of the screen door where a window should have been. I whimpered a little but waited. Eventually my eyes adjusted, and I could see the whole mummy. I was about to scream and run away, but that's when I saw the candy in its hand. It dropped the candy into my outstretched and open bag. (How I managed to do that I don't know.) When I heard the candy hit the bottom of the bag, I shouted, "Thank You," and turned and ran for the street where my Dad and my younger brother stood. My Dad eventually had to go up to the door to get my brother's candy, because he was too scared. I was sooo proud of myself for being so brave. That is until the next year when my brother (3 years younger than me) made the trip up that same sidewalk with the same scary sounds coming from the window (before I finished with the house next door) to receive candy from a really creepy witch. Needless to say I've been hooked on Halloween ever since.
When I reached junior high, me, my brother and two of our friends started decorating my parents' house each year for Halloween until I went off to college. My sister, who is nine years younger than me, helped us until it was time for her to go trick or treating. She started decorating the house after my brother and I were in college. Later after college, I worked on five small charity haunts. That's where I met my wife. She came as a sexy vampire, and it was love at first bite, uh I mean sight. When we got married, we decorated our apartment every year for Halloween primarily with a dummy just in front of the door, because that's all the space we had. However, I made it a point to have sound effects playing. The kids in the complex loved it. When we finally bought a house in 2003, our yard became a cemetery for a week up to Halloween and the yard haunt has gotten bigger and more detailed every year since. We also started throwing an annual Halloween costume party the Saturday night before Halloween to celebrate the anniversary of our meeting. (We spend more money and time on this event than we do the anniversary of our marriage.) Recently, my wife, my brother, my sister, an old friend from the days we decorated my parents' house, and myself have decided to build a Haunted House/Haunted Theatre. We've formed a business called Spearfinger Productions and hope to open up our haunt in 2010 or 2011.
Happy Haunting!!
