Horror movie fx
Posted On 03/30/2008 18:48:19 by Gloveman

I'm sure there are a couple of folks on this site who enjoy horror movies and maybe even some of the great fx that come with 'em.Outside of perhaps sci-fi,no other genre utilizes such a variety and quantity. So,does anyone have a fave(or two) that they enjoy.I think mine would be from Carpenter's 'The Thing.' It's the scene where they are attempting to revive a crew member(I can't remember the names right now and I'm not about to go pop the tape in to find out),the torso opens up with teeth and chops off some arms and then all hell breaks loose. The part I like is the head of the thing seperating from the body, whipping a tentacle/tongue around the chair leg, dragging itself across the floor, hiding for a moment and then-this is my favorite part-sprouting spider legs and scurrying away, efore the flamethrower gets it.The looks and reactions from the rest of the crew is great. A second fave is in the original 'Dawn of the Dead',where the zombie steps on top of a crate and promptly gets the top of its head chopped off by the helicopter blade.Quite a stunt/fx indeed. I tend to prefer the more traditional ones like this as opposed to the plethora of cgi nowadays(why did they use that for the undead in 'I am Legend' instead of a cast of madeup extras?).Anyhoo, that's my 2 cents, share your fave if you have one.

Hmm...my votes are going to be for Linda Blair's "head turning" scene in The Exorcist & the second scene I'll pick is when Jaws bites the crusty sea captain, Quint, in half as he clings to his ship.

Stolloween, you're right about American Werewolf in London, with Mr. Dr. Pepper himself. If I'm not mistaken, that won an oscar for the just-established 'best fx' category.

Great topic! I enjoy good CGI such as the fx in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy but still prefer "old school" effects. Here are a few favorite fx scenes from a few of my favorite movies.

Poltergeist: The ghost that forms in front of the door at the climax of the film, it materializes, raises its head and lurches toward the mom. Old school effects at there best. A miniature ghost shot in a water tank, love it.

An American Werewolf In London: The transformation. Enough said.

The Howling: The scene where one of the werewolves gets their arm chopped off. The arm then transforms back to human form all while flopping around on the ground. Very cool.

Anything from The Evil Dead Trilogy.
