Lego Dracula
Posted On 05/13/2008 23:42:16 by pumpkinfarmer

Well ghouls and gals, I am sure you want to know how I did it, right?  Well I will tell you anyway!

As I mentioned, this was orginally a costume idea.  It might become one again but for now, it is Mad Lab material

The challenge created by Mad Lab Marsha, asked us to create something using cardboard and hangers.

I have never really worked with cardboard and found it quite easy to work with, might create more Lego monsters.

In the mean time, let's get going with this one.

Here is the finished product.

This is how it began.  I wanted to create one that would be a nice size yet wasn't too crazy big.  I measured my keychain minifig and it was 1.5 inches high.  I wanted to make it about 3 feet so this works out to a 1:24 scale so I measured ever side, angle, width, height, etc and wrote all the measurements down.

Then off to the boxes.  Thankfully my company orders a lot of paper so I had plenty of copy paper boxes.

So I set to cutting my parts out by laying out each piece and cutting out with a razor blade.

Once all the body pieces were cut out, I began glueing and taping the legs and torso together.

To get the top of the legs covered, I took the length of cardboard and made cuts every inch, but only cut through one layer.  Made the cardboard flexible and contoured the curves.

Once the legs and torso were complete, I had to build the arms.  I cut out the initial shape, then I added "ribs" and covered in tape to bulk them up and make them three dimensional.

And of course, he needed the trademark claw.  I used baby formula cans to complete the claws for my minifig.

Once that was done, I had to create the head.  So I cut out three solid rings, run a plastic tube through the middle, added the stablizer slats and covered in single ply cardboard.

In order to make it a lego, it had to have the studs to connect the pieces with, so POOL NOODLES to the rescue.  I added the pool noodles to the torso pieces, arms and head.

Finally, I had all the pieces.  So I put them together and painted.

Finally, all he needed was a cape.  My wife was very helpful and while not available for photos, she was very creative in sewing the cape.  And yes, this is where the wire hanger comes in.  I used it to hold the shape of the cape and make it look upright.

COMPLETE!!

And yes, it is a LEGO

I hope you like, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.  I hope to do more of these monsters this year.  If you love legos or draculas or both, give this one a shot and let me know.  I would love to see it!
