Altar Tombstone - July Mad Lab project

For the Mad Lab July project, Evil Jan, I mean Marsha of Jekyll/Hyde assigned us four SEI, i.e. ordinary items for use in a prop.  Although the challenge was demanding, this is my creation.

First I started with the first items, books.  Any size, shape, color, etc.  I went to goodwill and purchased six Readers Digets collections and drilled a 1/2 inch hole in each.

I used three on each side and screwed them into the base.  I glued the pvc into the base and added the books, securing each with a wood screw.

I then took the larger three inch pool noodles, cut it into two, 2ft sections and slid over the pvc.  I then cut two, 3x3 inch squares and drilled holes in each to cap the pvc.  I then added the top piece of wood and wood screwed the entire thing together.

At this point, I need to add some color.  I mixed several colors each with some powdered texture from home depot and covered the entire prop.

I then sprayed the entire thing down with grey spray paint and added some small airbrushed details to create shadows and add some depth.

I also used the airbrush to add a green patina like color to the books to give them a further aged look.

Once that was set aside to dry, I had to create the second SEI, ivy.  I had some sprays of fake ivy, that I cut up and wound together with some floral wire.

Starting materials.

Finished product.

Then I added the third SEI, by adding the candles.  I lit and melted each with a heat gun and allowed them to drip down over the altar.

Finally, the fourth SEI was twine.  I used it to make a rosary using popsicle sticks for the cross and twine to bind them.  I then used the twine to braid the chain and braided in the beads to finish the effect.

Finally I combined all the elements and added the tombstone to the back for the final product.

I added the bucky for looks and voila, one mad lab entry complete.

Night shot to give you some idea of what it will look like on that big night.

Thanks for reading and let me know if you have any comments, questions.

Congrats again on your Mad Lab win!  I still love this project and I'm serious when I say I'm making one, too!  I've printed a pic of your project and it's on the idea board right now as I'm typing this.  Great job.
