Dem Bones, or, The Med Student's Nightmare
Dem Bones, or, The Med Student's Nightmare
The leg bone's connected to the hip bone, Or so my Daddy always said. But now and then, alone at night, A bone parade Bare names displayed, Goes marching through my sleepy head.
The leg bone is a femur, A tibia A fibula But ischiums and iliums They still give me the willy-ums So now I know the proper names, My drowsy mind plays skelly games.
Dancing figures in the void'll Whisper ulna and cuboidal Mandible and tarsal, Occipital and carpal! Steps sphenoidal Ribs rhomboidal Incus stapes coccyx talus Cha-cha line from here to Dallas!
LEAPING lacrimal and triquetrum (Making sure I don't forget 'em) GRAND JETES of zygomatics JUMPING hordes of bone fanatics STOMPING mosh pits through lymphatics POUNDING BOUNDING to a LIMBO And a ghastly grim marimbo XYPHOID ETHMOID CLICK AND CLACK CLANGING cymbals at my back!
In my dreams I hear their screams! VAULTS VERTEBRAL! SWIRLS CEREBRAL! HAMATE LUNATE MAXILLA! INFERIOR NASAL PORT-DE-BRAS!
Throughout the hours of the dark Balletic bone-boys hit their mark And keep me dizzy, all en pointe, My limbs still bending at the joint Until at last without a warning Alarm goes off, And it is morning.
