MM over Wood... So easy a six-year-old can do it!
Posted On 10/12/2006 20:40:30
Don't I feel silly! When I first started my project of upgrading my wood gravemarkers to MM, I was so nervous, asked a ton of questions, pestered anyone willing enough to be pestered, but especially GRAVEDIGGER (my inspiration) and SUSAN, and still didn't do it right, so had to add an additonal coat of MM and texture it properly.

Properly is a loose term that will mean different things to different folks.

Anyway, I added a technique of sponging the MM on to get a more suitable texture. Well then I was excited and things were coming along nicely so I encouraged my youngest grandson to stop by on my day off and make a tombstone with me.

Robbie came by this evening, and in no time flat was mudding his stone like a pro!

Tell me this kid isn't a Haunter!

We went through a list of clever names for his stone, but he selected Robbie GHOUL since he is going to be a ghoul this year. While the MM set a little on the marker, we practiced making the needed letters for the name.

Here's Robbie using a chop stick to etch his letters into the wet MM.
We could have Dremeled the letters out of harden MM, but I prefer to etch them into wet MM.

A great thing about etching in wet, mistakes are easy to erase! Just dab on more mud and no one is the wiser. This is a great thing for not only six-year-olds, but for their grandmas as well... eliminates the pressure of feeling you must be perfect.

Now satisfied with the lettering, Robbie finishes the MM portion by texturing the edges he used for support. Gotta love this kid.... He inherited my Halloween gene!

Now don't I feel silly thinking MM was too advanced for me!
