What A Deal!
Posted On 12/17/2007 22:25:11
I saw my friend Michele putting the rest of our Halloween stuff in a cart at work Friday night.  When I asked her what she was doing with it, she said the manager told her to mark it all down and throw it out.  I asked her if she would give the stuff to me for half price.  Everything was already 75% off, so I ended up getting $130 worth of stuff for $16!  I got two sets of skull stake lights, two light-up witch ground-breakers, two tombstones with pop-up grim reapers, a battery-operated color-changing skull candle, and four gel window clings.  I also got twelve sets of orange string lights last week for $15.  Now I just need to get the outside electric outlet replaced so I have a place to plug this stuff in.  That has to wait until spring thaw though.

How many tots did we get this year?  None for Kenny and I, none for his parents, and three for my parents.  My family only got those three because my mom chased down the little girls with a candy dish.  Kenny's parents didn't get any because mom was at work and dad is in the hospital again.  We didn't get any because we were at a type-o negative and lordi show in nj.  It was awesome.  I've decided that I am going trick or treating next year though.  I missed the whole thing this year, so I am going all out next year!  We did still decorate the yard and deck, though, just in case dad got better and came home.  We took all the outside stuff down on the first so it didn't get destroyed.  Our neighbors have two big dogs that sometimes get loose and run around like maniacs, and I don't think foam tombstones stand a chance against them.  Anyway, I did take a few pics of the yard and I'll try to post them sometime this week.

Melting Bones

I'm so happy I feel better.  I had gotten quite a nasty spider bite and had to take medicine for a week, but the meds made me feel really sick and cranky.  Now I'm all better and I actually got to work on Halloween stuff today.  I went to visit my family and my sister and I made some bones.  I didn't have my camera with me, so no pics though.  I cut 1/4" bamboo into 6"-12" pieces and wrapped aluminum foil around them to give them a little more bulk and shape.  Then we covered the foil with clay.  I used one type of yellow clay and my sister used a better pinkish clay.  I didn't read the label on mine, I just assumed that it needed to be baked in the oven like Kim's did so it would harden...Boy was I wrong!  I turned on the light to see how the bones were doing and all I could see was a few pink bones in a lake of yellow goo!!!  I read the package and it turns out the cheap yellow clay never hardens and you're not supposed to bake it.  It was hilarious.  On the plus side, I got a few good bones out of it and I learned a lesson...get super sculpey next time.  I plan on fastening some skulls and battery-operated candles to a 2x4 that is painted dark red to match the living room walls.  From the 2x4, I will hang rows of bones to create a beaded curtain effect.  I've seen something similar to this for sale at a few places, but I can't really afford it, plus it's too large for my space.

I'm also going up to Middletown today with Kenny and my sister.  We're going to Michael's and A.C.Moore.  I have a stack of coupons for 40% off one item for ACM.  Yay!  And their Halloween stuff is out and ON SALE!!!  I also want to check out Party City because they started putting out stuff around this time last year, so maybe I'll get lucky.

So many ideas

Kenny and I were sanding the deck on Tuesday to get it ready to be stained and also collecting the leftover stuff so I could return it to Home Depot.  We ended up returning only a few things because I came up with a prop design for almost everything laying in the yard.  Like the gate we built and decided not to use...I want to turn it into a fence panel.  We also have lots of lumber in all different sizes.  I think we're going to try to make a coffin too.  The leftover balusters are going to be heavy-duty stakes for any outdoor props just in case it's super-windy like it was last year.  I don't want to chase skulls and tombstones down the street again...it was only funny the first three times.  I have a 2x12x16 piece of pressure-treated lumber that I think I might use to make a bunch of old-fashioned wooden tombstones, like they used before the stone ones.  We have a jigsaw and a dremel with about 150 different bits, so we can make them look pretty authentic.  Oh, and I just bought a wrought iron patio set and I think I might cover with spider webs and see if I can get a few skeletons or zombies or something to sit at the table, maybe put some body parts on plates on the table.  I have so many more ideas too...my mind is going a mile a minute!  I just wish we had more than one day a week off together, especially since it always rains on that one day!!!
