First off, I am on trial #3 of the wolf project... But, in the meantime, I was looking for something to use as a form to put some mache on and rememberd this 'stuffing cage' I had bought for $1 in the clearance aisle... anyway, I mached that, cut it off the form and set it aside for awhile as I hadn't really thought about what I wanted to do with it. A few days later while working on other projects I again wasn't ready to stop mache-ing so I turned to the two halves of the stuffing cage form and it hit me! As I played around with it it dawned on me that I could use this for a beak... and I've been wanting to make a vulture soooo.....
I added a little bit of this and a little bit of that and got the basic top beak formed. But what to do about the head and neck? Then I happened to glance over to my small but growing pile of "rejects" and there it was... The first attempt on my wolf project that I decided was too heavy looked perfect! Now out comes the hot glue gun and voila! head and beak. Then I cut off part of the neck at an angle, turned it around and, well... just check out the pics and see for yourself. I think it is already looking rather vultur-ish...

This may get completed before the wolf... but we will see. I'll keep you posted as to updates on the pics....
Comments welcome!

I found this interesting calculator on one of my excursions on the web. Could prove very useful to those of us who may be a little on the perfectionist side of things... anyway, it's a calculator to help figure out proportions. There's one for a human skeleton (biped), bat wing, canine (hmm.. wolf comes to mind), hand and spider. It's definitely worth checking out

It also gives a cut list if you are using PVC pipe, how much you need depending on the diameter etc...
that's my little contribution for today!

Well... I've decided that the head and neck for this wolf project is just going to be too heavy for the motor to handle so back to the drawing board. This time I think I'm going to use chicken wire to bulk it up where needed and this should lighten the load some. I won't discard what I have, I'll just remove it from the existing wire frame by cutting it in half, put it back together and at least I'll have a start for something else. Jeez... just when ya think ya have something going .... I guess I need to slow down and think things through, but dang it! I get so excited!! o well..

Happy belated New Year everybody!!
Finally, the 'holidays' are over. I have about half of my stuff packed, hoping to get the rest put away this week.
However.... I have started my first official prop of the year! I got one of those animated hexmas deer (the head moves up and down) on clearance. I've taken all the lights off (half of which didn't work anyway) and then contemplated what I wanted to do with it. Well.. here's my idea - First off, it's a grazing deer, head down low to the ground and then it lifts up a bit. Then I thought, what if I put the head on upside down? so I did. that's when it hit me.... A howling wolf! My plan is to do a paper mache wolf head, then embelish it with fur of some sort, and then outfit the body with fur. I think a mangy looking wolf would be good. I may also try to make the head/face partially corpsed. The best part is that there is an outlet off of the motor that drives the head so I will be able to have eyes that glow! I've started the paper mache part. I was hoping to be able to get the base of the head and neck done, cut it off the frame work and continue working on it, then I realized that that probably won't work as it wouldn't be able to just slip back onto the frame (due to narrowing at the neck) but I still might think about it. I'm just not sure yet. Perhaps I could work it so that I could attach the head/neck back on to the motor mechanism without the frame.. i'll just have to see what I come up with. I don't know if I'll run into problems with weight once I get the head/neck done... so, whatcha think? I'm pretty darn excited! I'll have to remember to take pictures of the work in progress....

Wow! another season come and gone.... I hope everybody scared the bejeesus outta their TOTs! This year has been somewhat of a mixed bag of nuts so to speak... I almost didn't do my yard this year! I had nerve decompression surgery on my left shoulder on Oct 12 - and I'm still not back to 100%. But I just HAD to do the yard.. unfortunately no new props, but it was good just the same. TOTs were kinda scarce this year, perhaps due to being mid-week? who knows...
anyway... I'm hopeful for 2008 in many ways. I may or may not still be in Indiana, time will tell on that - much family and emotional distress on my end and I have been just hanging in limbo. I have so much catching up to do with everyone! I'm anxious to check out the gallery and everybody's pics and what not but I don't even seem to have time to get on line much these days. Just know that I think of you all and hope you are doing well...
I did have a bright spot in my day just yesterday... I was at a local grocery store checking out the clearance items and pondering over some kicking legs ($10 - discounted from $40!) and I got into a conversation with a very nice young man who is a fellow Halloween nut and is located basically down the road from me... well, we exchanged addresses and I told him about our little home away from home. I do hope he checks it out and that I have the opportunity to speak with him again. I would be so great to have someone close to share the passion with(Halloween that is.. LOL) ...
well, I just wanted to pop in and say hey...
I'll try to get back more often.. I miss you guys
moans and groans...

Howdy fellow haunters - It's been a while! Life, as always, has been nuts here at the ol' homestead... I have made it my summer job to get as much sun as I possibly can - I've definitely put our new pool to very good use this summer! other news --- celebrated the big "51" last month and became a grandma for the second time on July 24! a bouncing baby boy, 7 lbs 14 oz - he's just beautiful. My other grandson (8 y/o) has been in Michigan all summer with his dad and will be home next weekend, just in time for school to start. and with the start of school, (earlier each year it seems) my thoughts begin to turn to thinking of fall and all that goes with that. I really need to get my butt in gear and start some projects!!! As is usual, I will wait until the last possible minute, go into Halloween panic mode but I will manage at least a couple of new things. (I hope) unfortunately hubby does not share my enthusiam for all that is dark and ghoulish and just doesn't understand the therapeutic nature of being creative - o well - he'll have to get over it.
Anyway... I have missed you all and will try like mad to stop in more often. I hope everyone has had a fabulous summer and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone has in store for this year!!!
as always --- Mary
