I just finished my first self erecting bluckie. As in, gauge 9 utility wire makes it stand on its own: here is a single bluckie standing and minding his own business. I need to trim some of the excess wire off but other than that it seems to hold up pretty nicely. It feels pretty darn stiff and should pose well like this. Ofcourse you'd still need some rebar or something else in the ground to really hold him down. But all bluckie erecting methods kinda need that as far ass I know. More pictures and a howto page will follow while making number two. -Yaron.
So, it is official now. The Spirit store closest to me sucks (near Sunrise/Madison): they have the biggest location but the suckiest display of merchandise. I checked out the one on Folsom Blvd and US50 and the one on Date Dr near Madison / I80. The Folsom one is really decent, the one on Date just kicks ass. They had many props on display, the spencer 700W fog machines with timer control and even more costumes, wigs, masks etc etc than the others. Or so it feels. It was also nice and dark in there so it was easy to get into the feeling and see how a prop would do under bad lighting conditions. I might have to buy the 700W fogger to supplement my 1200W continous Lite F/X one I already own. Talking about my Lite F/X: did I share the fact that my 2.5 year old daughter found it an absolute hit? I let her push the button on the fogger while doing a test run. Ofcourse it had to be on constantly, and thus filled up the entire side yard with fog. It took several minutes before it had drifted away. Poor neighbors: their cars were invisible for that time frame :) All this time she was standing there going: 'See? See! See!'. She is so going to have a blast when it connects up to the fog chiller ;) -Yaron.
Okay, I had been messing around earlier this week with gauge 14 galvanized steel utility wire and stringing up a bluckie. That wasn't stiff enough. So today I was using hot glue on the joints to make it more stiff so it could stand on its own. Still, no standing bluckie or at least not posable enough because of the glue stiffness. Which means I have to really know the pose then hot glue the bluckie into that position. Not what I wanted at all.... So I went back to Lowe's and looked for more stiff wire.... They had a 50 feet roll of gauge 9 galvanized steel utility wire. Felt stiff enough to be promising. Well, one hour later I had the legs, feet, pelvis and torso strung up and standing on its own without the need for hot glue: YES! Tomorrow I will string the arms and hands with the same wire and see how well I can pose him. I bet it is going to be a pretty good solution. Especially if you compare it with the time consuming PVC pipe method. Ofcourse when posed outside some outside help might be needed to keep em upright and guard against wind. A piece of reebar or some fishing wire etc will do that trick. I'll post pictures as soon as I have 3 bluckies trying to climb onto my roof. Okay, I know that has been done before but it is such a good pose. -Yaron.
Woohoo! I finally got around ordering my own copy of the 2005 Halloween DVD set compiled by Halloween Propmaster... 8 DVDs with over 12 hours worth will be heading my way soon including my 'Sungonneth Cemetery' submission. *does the little happy dance* Okay, enough exitement for now, off to bed... -Yaron.
Okay, so today was a weird day. Had my team meeting this morning and then in the afternoon an 'off site' event with my management. The event included visiting the Rail Road Museum in old town Sacramento and a one hour trip on the "Spirit of Sacramento". Come to find out the museum has spookomotive events starting mid october. Might be something I want to do with the family. They haven't seen the museum yet. Even though the event was fun, it left me with a feeling of not having acomplished didly squat today. Unless you call picking up toys from the livingroom floor accomplishing something ofcourse. -Yaron.
Hey, guess what?!? Besides having a ton of Spirit of Halloween Super Stores in a 15 mile radius, I also have 2 Halloween Express stores in a 7 mile radius of my house. Both of them are on the way to/from work.... Boy, I am spoiled here in Sacramento... Now I just have to make sure to keep my wallet home so I won't go broke.... -Yaron. PS: Oh yeah, got my new work laptop: Dell Latitude D620, widescreen and DVD burner... Oh yeah!
Woohoo! Finally the carving on my celtic cross is done.... It took me close to 9.5 hours to do this since I was trying to figure out the best way to use my Dremel and the router attachment etc etc. Next one (if I'll make another one) would be a lot faster... Now one more regular tombstone to carve and then it is painting time for all of them... Oh, visited the closest Wal*Mart superstore today, some halloween stuff out but judging at the empty shelfs there is more to come. Did not see a 6' coffin at this one. Not even in a shipping box... -Yaron. PS: I really need to remind myself to get me a new thing to cover my mouth while carving. Man, can you say 'Pardon our dust!?!'... The wife is correct that I should not carve without it. Foam dust in your lungs is not good.... *waves at the wife and whispers 'Olive Juice'*
Was at the Wal*Mart closest to my work and whaddayaknow? They started to bring out their Halloween stuff. It is not all there yet but at least the 400W foggers are out and are pretty darned cheap: around 18 bucks. The timer remotes are 9.something... Not bad. The one thing of interest is a 6' coffin. Ofcourse it was on the top shelf and still in it's cardboard box *grumble* also, there was only one... Have to see if they will take it out tomorrow. Okay, off to work on my Celtic Cross for a little bit. Finally! -Yaron.
I have been too tired or too occupied with other things lately to finish my tombstones. It sucks coz I really want them to be finished. I really want to see how the celtic cross will look like when it has been painted. Did I mention before that I was going to build a cemetery fence and a gate? I calculated I need about 11 pieces of 8 feet fence and then 2 5 feet gate doors plus their columns. I wonder how I am going to pull this off. I think I can as long as I can get the equipment here: no truck and the SUV not big enough to bring the 10 feet PVC lengths and 4'x8' foam sheets home. Time to ask the neighbor for his truck or one of the guys at work for his Nissan Titan. -Yaron.
