14 JOL's
Posted On 10/12/2008 05:38:38

Last week I started making papier mache JOL's that will spell out "Happy Halloween". It started as a commision, but that fell through. The supplies were all ready so I decided to do it for myself. It's papier mache, after all, which is about as inexpensive a medium as you're going to find. The last letter was made tonight and is drying. The H will be hung on the porch rail tonight and the first picture taken. Every day a new letter will go out until the whole thing is spelled out.

IF I REMEMBER I will take a picture from the same place every day around sunset until they're all out. Hopefully the condo association won't make me take them down. This is the second story so there's concern about conking those below.

If they do object, I will attempt to hang them from the overhang. I already have quite a few pm JOL's on the porch and a handful of Funkins. See my blog for a picture.

One funky JOL

This poor papier mache pumpkin was bumped, banged and knocked around while still damp. The result is that he split. I nearly threw him away, then saw a possibility. So here's Mr. Ouch.

Dollar Tree Score 10.08.08

Some drinking vessels from Dollar Tree. We got one each of our favorites.

Who is the odd one?
Posted On 10/05/2008 10:23:27

There are more social networking sites every day. That's what this place is in case you wondered. All have their own set of rules. Whilst drinking my first cuppa this morning and checking out the new gallery pictures, a few thoughts hit me.

"This picture would be banned at most of my other groups, but is required here. That picture prolly isn't on-topic here, but is just what they want at the other groups."

Followed by "Well, my friends all know I'm odd, so they would expect one like that from me. But it would prolly get me kicked out of the other groups."

So who is the odd one? Really. Should there be a constitutional amendment or a guarantee in the Bill of Rights for our right to scare? Or is it already guaranteed?

Then I decided not to start that debate and got myself a cookie.

Progress

The orange totes have begun to appear. What would we do without them?

Half of the shelves are done, (they get dusted at least ONCE a year lol) and the village has a new backdrop.

The Funkins should be coming out of their bags soon. Along with the papier mache JOL's, I have enough to fill the whole porch. Where will I put the tombstones? This is the first year we have TOO MUCH to put on the patio! Maybe I need to give away some of the plants...anyone need a pencil cactus?

The polymer clay bats will be hung from the ceiling with care and this year they will have cheesecloth ghosts to join them.

The black cat collection has had only one new addition...gotta work on that this next year.

It's really amazing how many props I've been able to make with almost no money. Being poor gets the creativity going.

Commercial Prop Rant
Posted On 09/15/2008 18:13:55

I hate going into any of the Halloween speciatly stores because it just makes me sick to see the poor quality for so much of it and the high price tag stuck to junk. When you know how little the pieces cost that make up these things it just makes you burn.

Planned obsolescense makes me angry and so much of what I see is NOT designed to last year after year. For $100, I want it to last for several years.

I look at masks that cost $40 and up where the paint doesn't even line up with the features.

If only I had the money to get started, the quality things I could make!

Thanks for letting me put in my .02

Decoration Has Begun

Since I already had some pieces

on the porch drying....

The little yellow things you see on the plant will some day be miniature pumpkins. (hopefully)

I'm not sure whether I think I'd like these for an actual grave, but I think they'd rock for a Halloween cemetery.

Hearse Ride?
Posted On 08/29/2008 20:31:36

There are so many awesome vintage hearses. I wonder if one was made large enough to hold a dozen people if folks would like to ride in one on Halloween. Say from one haunt to another through a park.

Maybe a mini bus could be converted rather than starting from scratch. Lots of red fabric inside to actually look like the inside of a hearse, but without the paraphernalia required to hold a coffin.

A long, skinny coffin shaped table in the middle maybe. Driver in tux with tails and white gloves.

Would you do this? Say for $10 per person per hour?

It could be used for other days besides Halloween and rented out for parties...weddings even.
