As some may Know one of my favorite things is making props ,for anyone and reason, I like it that much. Anyway, here is a short story that REALLY Happen: Like everyone I'm going to storage to get my props for Halloween and stuff, well I have this Mummy I call SOPHIE . I put Sophie in my car Passenager seat,Roll the window down and prop her arm up on the sil.She was glad to be out of storage,I have a Two door car:I plug her into the cig lighter and shes good to roll, off we go. well, I'm driving down a major street come to the intersection, and had to stop for the red light .There is this bus stop on the corner and there were 5 people sitting on the bus bench, and one lady walking up/down the sidewalk, she was yelling at someone and wasn't paying to much attention to what was going on around her. the people on the bench saw Sophie started pointing and ribing each other and saying wow and making comments like she's cool, and the lady still is yelling at whoever , she finialy turns around and starts walking back toward my car,THATS when she finaily see Sophie, the Lady lets out one of the biggest yells you will ever hear, and faints. so I pulled my car around the corner and got out to make sure she was going to be ok!!she was but then she started yelling at me, saying" THATS JUST NOT RIGHT",she said it about three times got up a started all over again. after she clammed down I told her I was very sorry for scaring her so bad. I came home and told my hubby what happen,(Jack the Ripper)LOL so hard his face started to turn colors.
I am working on a cool Prop for those if you how haven't seen it .I call them fishing pole skellies. I barrow this idea from my Good Freind Mike C. But I changed it up a bit so you could set this guys where ever you want through out your Graveyard and have them say anything you want. Because the prop1 control card has a chip you can program to talk.
Things you need :
plaster of paris and 3lbs coffee can and a knife
screws and black spray paint and small copper pipe
skulls that are light weight and a servo, and servo card= prop 1
hot glue sticks and dremel and drill bits, and fishing line.
and a power supply 5v. I bought mine here: http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item/PS-537/480/5VDC_3.7A_SWITCHING_POWER_SUPPLY_.html
First I took the lid of the coffee can and cut an "X" in the middle of the can lid, and put a piece of 1/2" PVC PIPE through the lid.Just long enough to clear the lid about 4" inches and the pipe touches the bottom of the coffee can.
Then I mixed some plaster of paris and pour it in the can about half way full is all you need. and snap the lid on the can making sure the pipe was straight. then let it set-up to dry.
***** Now that the plaster has set up you have to fix and mount for your fishing poles.***
You will need a dremel tool and a 1/2" connector end cap and a drill and bits:
I cut the fishing rod handle off and drilled a small hole in the end cap.LEAVE the fishing pole LOOPS on.**** put the big end of your fishing pole through the hole you just drilled.DONT MAKE THIS HOLE TO BIG YOU WANT IT SNUG
When you have completed this steps you should have this:
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l50/Blinky_12/Fishing%20Pole%20Skulls/
Next I spray painted the whole thing black to help hide it.
Now if you want you can animate them: By using small servo's . like a 311 from servo city.
http://servocity.com/html/hs-311_standard.html
Next cut you and small piece of copper pipe that you can buy at Lowes In the Pipe dept. measure it out to about 12" inches. Then drill a hole in the middle of the pipe so it will slide down the fishing pole and rest on the next "loop" eyelet. Making a "T" formation****DONT MAKE THE CENTER HOLE TO BIG****Next Take 2 electronic straps and make a "X" across them to help hold them in place .*** But, NOT TO TIGHT *** You want it to wiggle. I will try and POST MORE PICS ToMorrow *** Drill small hole in each end of the pipe where you will able to run fish line to.
Mount the servo sideways on your fishing pole by useing " Hot Melt Glue sticks " rest it on one of the loops, below where the copper "T" is... I am sorry I dont have a pic of it at this time.
Run Fishing line to the servos that you mounted below the copper pipe "T". to each side of the servos horn. so, when the servos kick on you will have them wiggle. connect to each end of your copper pipe. It will look like a "V" fashion when you are Done running the fish line.
Next I bought some light weight skulls from "Fright Catalog" these are the ones I bought http://www.frightcatalog.com/Halloween-Props/Skeletons/Skull-1015060/. Next I mounted the skulls on the fishing poles. You may want to use Hot melt glue to hold them in place.
The prop 1 card you will be useing has a built in chip so you can program the skull to talk or sing.Igot mine at:
http://www.parallax.com/
Connect your power supply to the parallax card.By striping the end off and hooking to the right spot on the card. LEAVE THE THING ON THE CORD THAT LOOKS LIKE A "C" BATTERY,DONT CUT IT OFF.Next take a sandwich bag and place your controller card in the bag making small holes for the cord to come out, this is to weather proof it so it doesnt get wet. Then put tape around the cords and holes making sure no water can get in. then Tape it to the pole.
You can use black trash bags to make a robe or dress for them.or some else that is light weight.
That is all to this Tutorial I hope you have fun making it it is real cool prop.
I thought I would write about HowTo Make a Non Moving Mummy.
You Will need the following:
1 styro wig head from Sallys Beauty Supply's
8- yards of cheese cloth some Walmart's carry it by the yard.
1- pair of platex house gloves Dollar Store Item
3- swim noodles Dollar Store Item ( Try to get the light colored ones so they dont show through the cheese cloth )
1 pot of coffee Dont Use the grounds ( unless you drink some then make 2 )
sissors, packing tape, newspaper, large trash plastic bags as well as The supper market bags.
1- Living Skull Mask and Elmer Glue
IF you want the mummy to stand then you will need PVC PIPE and connectors.and screws Lowes or Home Depot items.
1=8'long 1/2 " pvc pipe
2=1/2" T=connector
2-45%= 1/2 " angle connectors
2-90%=1/2" pvc connectors
Craft paints, Black White Brown and Red
Decided How Tall you want your mummy to be start with the legs first.First you have to cut all your PVC PIPE to the length ( how Tall ) you want the mummy to be.Follow This Chart. to make it stand up.Screw all the connectors and the joints to keep it together.
I'll show pic's in Photobuckets.: Mummy Pic's
Once you have all your PIPES cut and in placed and screwed. you then have to start making the body.
Do this by cutting the swim noodle to length by sliding them on the legs of your mummy. (I used newspaper rolls for mine) But leave aleast a 1/2" at the bottom of the PIPE showing DON'T cover the end of the pipe. And use a small plastic supper market bag filled with some news paper to make the knees Tape in place.
If you have a lot of newspaper around then use the newpaper by making rolls .Stuff the newspaper in the bags and roll the bags on the floor to get all the air out then wrap them around the PVC PIPES to form legs with the tape and shape the legs as you go.. .Working your way up to the Hip area.Once you have reached the hip area, Go back and do the feet.Make sure you have aleast a 1/2" of PVC Pipe sticking out the bottom where the heel of the foot is. Next take a small supper market bag and stuff newpaper in the bag to form the feet, Making a left foot with a toe bump and a right foot with a toe bump and remember to form an arch in the foot and a heel.Tape this onto the correct side of your mummy legs.Over the PVC PIPES then find the end of the pipe and cut a small whole in the bag to uncovering the pipe hole.and tape.( This is where it will slide down over the rebar. ) So it will stand-up.
Next we will form the body you must deceided if your Mummy is a Guy Or Gal I like making Girl Mummies because you can dress them up alittle better with Mummy jelwery. So you take a Large Trash Bag cut the bottom straight across open it up and slide it up from the feet to the waist area. Tape the bottom of the bag in Place. After you have form the hip area with newpaper stuffing.Leave the top open so you can stuff news paper in it to form the body. Scuplt the body with packing tape.Once you have enough stuffing Tape the top of the bag to the pipe "T" crossings. If you are making a Girl Mummy it will look better with a high waist effect. Next will be the Breast area. Use 2 small supper market bags to form breasts tape in place using a criss-cross taping, like she is wearing a bra. now for the Backside ( using 2 more small bags stuff with newspaper too make your bum ) Tape in Place.
WE are almost done making the body. Next we are going to work on the arms,if you bought a swim noodle for the arm cut it to lenght. To fit the arms.If you are using newspaper then stuff some more bags and roll them on the floor to get the air out. Then tape around the PVC PIPES. dont cover the ends of the pipes.Next Stuff newspaper or cotton in the HouseHold Platex gloves, turn them inside out so the white of the glove is on the outside. Then Stuff the fingers with the stuffing PACK THEM WELL. Next take the wraist part of the glove open them up and slide the gloves on the correct arms and tape in place. Next place your Wig Head on the PVC PIPE POLE for the head.Form the shoulders using small bags again and shaping the shoulders over the pipes and tape in place.
Now for the head ofyour mummy I used a LIVING SKULL MASK take the mask out of the package, Dont Throw the plastic cover away.Paint your mask with some Elmers Glue mixed in your paints . It Helps the paints to stay on. Start with Black paint all over the Mask as a base coat. Then as you work your mask using lighter colors to high light the mask, much like putting make-up on. Once the mask has Dried it will be time to put it on the mummy.Do this using the plastic cover that came with the mask. Trim the edge of the plastic off.You will use this for support under the Mask. Then Placing the mask where it belongs, for more support use a small bag stuff with newpaper up under by the plastic cover. Tape in place around the edges and under the mask.
Next it is time to age the cheese cloth for your mummy. open the chesse cloth up flat, and cut into 2"inch strips.About 3' to 4' long . Take your Cheese cloth and place it in the container large enough to hold the cheese cloth and pour the coffee all over it stiring it, around so you get all the cheese cloth wet with the coffee. After the cheese cloth has been soked for about a hour with coffee. Hang it on your clothes line to dry DO NOT ring the cloth out, let air dry. This will age the cloth.
Once your cloth has dried then it is time to start to wrap your mummy. I start with the feet. I took a 4"x4" piece of cheese cloth and cover the toe area front to back wrapping it around the toe area. Then take a piece of your cheese cloth that is cut in 3' length and find the center by folding it in half. Once the center is found unfold it and start to wrap your mummy's foot. By taking the cheese cloth at the middle and start at the bottom of toes and wrap around the foot and tuck in the 4"x4" as you go. Using a criss-cross pattern.working your way to the heel area then place another 4"x4" piece of cloth on the heel and wrapping the foot tucking the 4"x4" square in to the wrapping as you go.Work your way up the leg using this criss-cross pattern. DONT COVER THE PIPE HOLE this will be your stand.
Now you have reach the pulvis area, take a small strip of chesse cloth and make a belt around the mummy waist. Now run a strip of cheese cloth between IT 's legs tucking the cheese cloth ends into the belt area. Go back and forth through the pulvis area like a diaper.Once this is done then you find center of the cheese cloth strip and start at the waist working your way down in a criss-croos pattern. completely covering the area.
Once you have finished with the hip it will be time to do the upper part of your mummy.I start at the neck wrapping in a criss-cross pattern I had to cut 2 more 4"x4" to help cover the breast area .it is ok to use a round wrapp first in this area then add any necklaces or decoration to you neck area at this time. To help bury them in the cloth Then use the criss- cross for the top layer.Work your way down to the waist,Over lapping alittle of the waist. Now your upper body is complete.
Next is the arm wraps. I used 2 more 4"x4" to cover the 1 for each elbows tucking the 4"x4" in as I went.Working my way to the wraist in a criss-cross pattern again.
Now for the fingers you have to decided if you want to wrap seperate finger use tiny sqaures over the finger tips or a Mummy Mit. using tiny 4"x4" to cover the tips of the fingers. wrap in the criss-coss pattern.
Once the Arms are done and the hands That leaves the Head.
Now the fun part, If you are making a girl Mummy you may want to buy some jewlery for her at the dollor store any thing that looks like it would be good on a mummy. Dress her up abit.I bought a arm band snake thing at Part city and a Plastic snake necklace and I bought Gold ribbon at the cloth shop to make arm bands and wraist bands. And I buried them under one coat of cheese cloth so they could n't be taken off. I also had a old wig so I used that too. and I pull some of the hair thought the wrappings so it look like she as comming apart.
Start to wrap the mummy's head under the chin area, working to tuck the mask and anything else in to the wrapping .Once this was all wrapped I took some ELMERS GLUE and half and half it with water and painted the banages all over her head to help hold things in place and to keep it from being stolen.
Now She is Done . If you have any questions about How To'S just PM me.
Your Mummy will stand when you put some rebar in the ground just slide her down over the rebar.
If you want to make a Crook and Fail I use a Plastic Yard Candy Cane I bought at Xmas,I pulled the stripes off it, and then I used Black electricial Tape and Gold ribbon I tuck the gold ribbon in on the edges of the Black electricial Tape. As you wind them around the candy cane. And I bought a curtain fob at the cloth store for the end the the Fail. You can slide and small electricail tie strap into the cloth bandages on each hand. Drill and small hole into you crook and fail. Put the strap throught so they stay where you put them.Tighten the straps down around them.

Hi All My Main passion in Life is animated Life size Props, I have this Mummy I made that is animated, I call her Shopie. And That Is where this story begins:
I went to storage last Halloween to get all my stuff, I live in Houston. I loaded all my stuff in the car, I have a two door car/hatch and I put Shopie in the passenger seat. Rolled the window down a prop her arm up on the sill plugged her in to make sure she still worked and away we went, as I was driving home I had to go down one of the main draggs here in town.
As you might have guessed I had to stop for a few stop lights, boy was I getting looks from people as I drove by them.
But,at this one light there was a bus stop right by the light, and there was 5 people waiting for the bus.Four of the people saw Shopie Right away and were pointing and making cool remarks, But this one Lady was so busy talking on her cell phone and yelling at someone she didnt see Shopie until..
She jammed her phone in her purse turned around to see what they were talking about and just then that is when Shopie head turned to look right at her. she let out this Blood Curdling yell and fainted...
Happy Halloween
