Even though my local Target won't have Halloween stuff out until October, their website has about 30 pages of Halloween decor. They've got a bubble fogger and some other new products this year. The more expensive items usually stick around until after Halloween, when they go for 50% off ( I got some cheap metal fences last year).

MacUpdate has a deal on Aura - Mac software that lets you create soundscapes from several audio files. I was looking into making a Java application to do this, but for $8 I might give this a shot. Unfortunately, I don't think it can export the result as an MP3 file.
[Update] Apparently, Aura is not a very good piece of software. However, you might want to try Natural Worlds. It's free and comes with a thunderstorm soundscape. As with Aura I don't think it can export a soundscape to an MP3 file, but there are other tools for that... muwahahahaha! This would be great for making your own haunt soundtrack that doesn't sound like it's looping. If you buy try it, let me know how you like it. If you know of any free Windows soundscape software, give me a holler and / or post a comment about it!

I'm a t-shirt and jeans type of guy, so I'm always on the lookout for a good zombie shirt or the like. Shirt.woot has had many good ones, and today's sold out fast. Fortunately, it will be on sale again starting this Friday for $15. On Friday, go to the Shirt.woot blog and find the latest entry with "Reckon" in the title. In that blog entry, follow the "Zombeer" link.
Enjoy! --Update-- Here's a link to the shirt, once again available for purchase: Zombeer Shirt

Engadget has an article today (mostly pictures) about a cool keyboard, mouse and mousepad for sale in Japan. Too bad it's in Japan. :(

Though it's a stretch to say it Halloween related, I thought I'd write about a great deal I found on independent Mac software. I use Photoshop for creating Halloween graphics for invitations and such, but I've been using an ancient copy of it and I can't afford an upgrade. I found this new Mac application called Pixelmator that seems to do the job well. It turns out that it's part of a bundle of 12 applications offered up at MacHeist for only $49. If you're a Mac user, I highly recommend checking it out. If you decide to buy, you can say I referred you by using this link: https://www.macheist.com/buy/invite/83143 Please do not feel obligated to do so. I'll get an additional free application if you buy through me, but I can live without it. If you don't want to buy with me as a referral, just go to MacHeist.com This offer only lasts through the 23rd (of January)!
Thanks! Alas, the MacHeist 2 bundle is now gone. May it rest in peace. They donated $500,000 to charity. Isn't that awesome? If you create a MacHeist account, you won't miss the next one (the heist usually starts in December).
In an earlier blog, I wrote about Shirt.Woot selling Halloween T-shirts for $10 (includes shipping). What I neglected to mention was that they post a new design every night at midnight Central time. They tend to sell out fast, so check it before you go to bed! You might be able to get the shirt before Halloween if you pay extra for overnight shipping. Sorry about the confusion!
I've FINALLY got some lights up. This year has been a scheduling nightmare. We drove out to Kansas to visit relatives last weekend, so I didn't have a chance to get decorations up. I'll be working frantically from here on out I'm sure! I hope everyone is having a great season!
Bare with me while I geek-out for a bit here. I spent some time this weekend making it easier to write programs for my talking skull. I started writing a simple Java application that plays a selected soundtrack and records commands that I send to my Arduino board (and the to my skull's servo). When I'm done recording the program, I can play it back with the music whenever I like. At least, that's how it's supposed to work... Unfortunately, I've got a bug in the system that is causing the commands to be either recorded or played back at a slower speed than normal (I don't know which). I've got a lot of things I can try to fix it, so I should have it working some time this week. Once that's working, I'll have to add support for multiple servo programs. Yeesh. I thought I was making things easier... I hope everyone's prop work is going well. Good luck!
It's alive! I've got my first talking skull working! All it does right now is open the jaw when I press a button in a Flash program. Now for some Java coding fun and some good music. My plan is to do something like the singing skulls out on YouTube (the ones that sing The Headless Horseman). The difference is that I'll only have one full-sized skull. I won't make the skull turn at all, but He'll have a miniature skeleton band for back up. I doubt I'll have time to finish it for this year, but who knows?
