The clown face facade is nearly 90% complete!
Posted On 05/17/2007 21:15:40

This is the last bit of pictures of the clown face facade.  It will be the entrance for a secondary attraction called "BIG TOP TERROR"

I cut out the letters to 3' x 2'. They will be painted white with a red outline. I have carnival style light bulbs that will screw into the letters when we drill 1" holes and wire the sockets.

I painted the hair flouresant green first and then the red and the orange. The hair is glued to a plywood piece and screwed to the face. The nose is mounted as well.

I know the quality of the pic is poor but this kinda what the blacklight looks like.

All that is left is to mount the black lights above under a shelter and then paint the red and yellow stripes for the circus look.

I will continue to photo log my progress on my other projects for this season. Some highlights will be the approx. 40 floresant 3-D panels for BIG TOP TERROR and another facade of a cave. I plan to utilize ALOT of blue board foam and hard coat for that. So stay tuned!

Thanks!!!!

more clown nose and hair pics...

Here is some pics of the clown nose. Its a kick ball from Wal-mart. I wrapped the wooden ring wit duct tape and taped the ball to the ring. I painted it with primer white and then coated it with black light red.

The hair is sculpted with a heavy wire brush and a palm sander. I will coat it with white primer and then black light paint. I suppose I will use liquid nails to stick it to the ply-wood.

The saga continues...more later! Thanks!

The clown face continues...

My first plan for the nose was a total failure. The spray foam did not cooperate as I would have liked. I have already moved on to plan B so, I will have pics of that later. I applied the obvious K.I.S.S. rule and it worked, go figure!

Anyway, here is the latest progress pics of the face. I have changed the eye stripes to orange and I cut out the mouth and a hole for the modified nose assembly, (sounds technical, lol)

Please take note of the hair. Its 3 layers of blue board that are glued together. I will use a rasp and heavy wire brush to shape and sculpt more detail.

I will mount these to a piece of ply-wood so it can be screwed to the sides of the face easily.

Here is the latest clown pic. My son is holding the kick ball that will be the nose. I will brush on invisible UV clear over the white so it will have a really haunted look. I hope to mount a black light soon so I can continue painting flouresant paint and not miss any spots.

here is a pic of the back in case you wondered. its framed with 2x4's and will tie into the existing facade to be painted after this is done.

Just started the clown face

These are some pics of the clown face. The mouth is 7' high and appx. 34" wide at the bottom. I haven't cut out the mouth yet and will try to mold luan the contour of the mouth down a hallway that will be painted like a throat.
I plan to monster mud a kick ball from Wal-mart and mount it on the face for his nose. I want to do this also for his hair. I will cut a sheet of plywood in half and use the 4x4 squares for each side of his hair. It will be built up with wood and chicken wire and then coated with monster mud. I will paint it to look like clown hair.
We plan on flooding it with black light so I will use floresant (sorry) paint.
I am going to make it a point to photograph the construction for you all as well as myself.

Getting my sketches in order for halloween parade floats for 2007
Posted On 01/20/2007 17:05:35
I have 4 solid design ideas for this years float. I have done a haunted casino, haunted carnival, and last year was a duel entry of a haunted cemetery and Sleepy Hollow. I have worked out most of the details and kinks out of my 4 ideas. Unfortunatly, one of my ideas is pirates and I need a much larger wagon than your standard 7'x14' hay wagon. A co-worker of mine offered a 43' semi-trailer that her husband could retro fit into a 4 wheeled wagon style. All that said and done, he couldn't get it to turn properly. The tongue only had a limited range. I would have never been able to make the 3 90 degree turns on the parade route. The scale of the pirate ship and additional scenery could not be made smaller to suite me so, I will put the pirate theme on the back burner.
My other 3 ideas are able to be scaled smaller to fit on one wagon that is slightly modified to 8'x16' by screwing 4x8 sheets of plywood to the deck. One of them is a haunted gas station. I know it sounds lame but I have incorperated alot of detail and movement. The judges love that. The float would consist of a fuel island with 2 themed gas pumps. They have the appearance of toe-pincher coffins and have the 50's lighted round disc on top. In the center of the pump is a container with actual bubbling liquid inside that simulates gas.

At the beginning of the float is a rotating sign the says "Gash Station", the price is $6.66.

Here are some additional color sketches. You can see the sign, first pump prototype, a haunted pop machine.
After the pumps is a 3 sided garage with the store front, half garage, and tire rack taking up the sides. I would construct to scale themed vehicles to sit by the pumps. Possibly the Munster car and the Scooby-Do Mystery Machine.
The second idea is a haunted play ground. The play equipment is all themed medival torture and spooky. The slide is also the guillotine, the see-saw is over a tombstone, basketball hoop is the stocks, monkey bars are spider webs, there would be tree house in a monster tree. I got the idea for the tree from a picture on Headless Horseman hayride website.
The third idea is my favorite, Nightmare Before Christmas. The float would be split in half and the first half would be the familiar spiral cemetery hill. A life sized Jack would be be posed on the hill. The back side would be Jack as sandy claws in the sley and bone reindeer with Zero out front over a miniature city. I feel confident in my sculpting abilities enough that I can make Jack look right. It would all hinge on that.
I will keep you posted on my float projects as well as my haunted house projects. The haunt takes priority and I have some really cool things coming up including an Egyptian facade as well as a giant clown face that you walk thru.
Stay tuned and thank you for your time!
