Meeting Brinke Stevens
Posted On 04/06/2008 15:44:54

This weekend in the KC area was a comic convention. Pretty interesting, but my focus was getting to meet my all-time fave B movie scream queen/femme fatale-Brinke Stevens. (If you don't know who she is,shame on you. She's only appeared in about 100 plus horror movies.Go look her up.)I guess you're worried about meeting an idol,in the sense that they will not live up to expectations.I had read she's always a pro and very personable.A buddy of mine worked with her a few years back and had praise for her.Let me tell you, she's at least all that. First off, she's 53 years old but can pass for a decade younger-she is still a lovely lady. I went for both days and we probably talked for an hour or more, about movies, conventions, art, even the recent passing of Dave Stevens. She could not have been nicer to me, or any of the others who came by. A class act all the way. If you're a Brinke fan and she's going to appear anywhere near you, buy the ticket and make a beeline to meet her,you won't be disappointed.

Horror movie fx
Posted On 03/30/2008 18:48:19

I'm sure there are a couple of folks on this site who enjoy horror movies and maybe even some of the great fx that come with 'em.Outside of perhaps sci-fi,no other genre utilizes such a variety and quantity. So,does anyone have a fave(or two) that they enjoy.I think mine would be from Carpenter's 'The Thing.' It's the scene where they are attempting to revive a crew member(I can't remember the names right now and I'm not about to go pop the tape in to find out),the torso opens up with teeth and chops off some arms and then all hell breaks loose. The part I like is the head of the thing seperating from the body, whipping a tentacle/tongue around the chair leg, dragging itself across the floor, hiding for a moment and then-this is my favorite part-sprouting spider legs and scurrying away, efore the flamethrower gets it.The looks and reactions from the rest of the crew is great. A second fave is in the original 'Dawn of the Dead',where the zombie steps on top of a crate and promptly gets the top of its head chopped off by the helicopter blade.Quite a stunt/fx indeed. I tend to prefer the more traditional ones like this as opposed to the plethora of cgi nowadays(why did they use that for the undead in 'I am Legend' instead of a cast of madeup extras?).Anyhoo, that's my 2 cents, share your fave if you have one.

Horror movies-what do we do ?
Posted On 01/06/2008 17:24:42
Ok, in the past week or so I've seen 'Alien vs Predator' and 'One Missed Call.' Rather pedestrian mildly entertaining-I've certainly seen worse (remember 'Stigmata' a few years back?) My question is- as horror movie fans, do we support sequels and remakes in the hope that original horror movies will be greenlit (Hwood runs on money, ya know). Or do we ignore these and run the risk that horror is becoming a dead genre? (no pun intended).

For every 'Session 9' or 'Blair Witch', we get six more Friday the 13ths( I know I could be on thin ice here, as Jason has quite a following). I admit, I go see every horror movie my schedule allows-including all of Jason- so I might be contributing to a problem. Of course, sometimes it seems that any genre of movies is loaded with the same sequels/remakes/adaptations etc. etc. What do you all think?
