Thanks for the comments!  The edges are burned.  You have to be careful when doing this because it can get out of hand quickly!  I think it is a really cool & cheap way to give a creepy effect.  Plus, each invitation is slightly different.

How did you get the edges of the paper like that - it doesn't look like you used regular scissors. I love the effect.
