Jason & Grant of Ghost Hunters
Posted On 10/23/2009 13:14:32

While watching the SyFy original series "Ghost Hunters," we only get to see a very small part of their personalities, but last night I got to know Jason and Grant a little better. I attended an informative lecture given by the two super nice and very down to earth guys at The Pullo Center in York, PA. They spent the evening discussing the incredible experiences they have had while doing paranormal investigations and showed some very convincing videos and EVP's they have captured. The two are both really funny and joked around with each other and the audience all evening. They also had sample investigations which they let the audience try to figure out. The lecture ended with a question & answer session that proved to be educational and extremely entertaining. I had a great time, learned a lot and became an even bigger fan of both Jason and Grant. If they come to your town, I must insist that you go and see them.

Another Haunting Weekend
Posted On 10/13/2009 01:13:29

Two Haunts, a comedy about zombies and a French horror play; it was another incredible weekend for my Halloween season. To start the weekend off right, on Friday evening I took a trip down to Riverdale, MD to visit GoatMan Hollow Haunted Attraction. I must say this Haunt was an excellent choice. GoatMan Hollow is a theatrical Haunt with a very elaborate storyline and at least a five minute scene acted out in every room you enter. Another unique aspect to GoatMan is that they include you as a visitor and put you right into the story. The acting throughout was exceptional and the set design, extraordinary. They had an elevator scene which I have never experienced before and thought it was a great addition. After getting off of the elevator, you head right into a haunted attic scene that absolutely blew me away, especially when this “ghost” crawled across the floor heading right for my feet. But I think my favorite part of GoatMan was a dining room scene with a family of cannibals gathered around a table and feasting on some live flesh. Yummy!! I will easily have to rate GoatMan Hollow as one of my new favorite Haunted Attractions in Maryland.

On Saturday night I hit the road to Mountville, PA for the never disappointing Field of Screams Haunted Attraction. I have been attending Field of Screams since I was in high school and have loved it every year. FOS has three separate attractions including the Haunted Hayride that is absolutely the best hayride I have ever experienced. The detail put into the scenes scattered throughout this massive corn field is unsurpassed. They make a lot of changes from year to year but FOS also keeps some of their classic scenes around which I love. The slaughterhouse with the huge bloody pigs coming down from the ceiling dripping everywhere will always be my favorite. FOS also has live entertainment every night to keep the party going while you wait in line for the attractions. And food vendors galore, if you would like hot chocolate, cider or a freakin’ cheese steak while you wait to have your pants scared off, by all means, it’s there for you. One other reason Field of Screams will always be a favorite of mine is that they host a skateboarding contest right in the middle of the park. This year they had a brand new ramp sponsored by Red Bull. For me, you can’t have a better place to go than somewhere with skateboarding and haunting.

Sunday afternoon I finally got the chance to see “Zombieland.” I didn’t really want to wait to see this film but I can say it was definitely worth waiting for. Oh my god, this film was incredible!! From the first slow motion action scenes to the death of…well, if you’ve seen it you’ll know, this film had it all. I loved every minute of it. I haven’t laughed out loud in a theatre for the longest time. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Lots of gore and lots of laughs = Great film!!

After Zombieland, I took a trip down to Washington DC to see the Molotov Theatre Group perform a French Horror which consisted of three acts that would have made the squeamish run for the door. “Blood, Sweat & Fears II: Guilty Pleasures” was filled with horror, filthy smut and a lot of genuine laughs. I don’t go to the theatre often but if there were more shows like this one, I’d go for sure. The performances were excellent and I absolutely loved the audience participation. Before we entered the theatre we were asked if we would like a poncho. I didn’t know how to answer this question but I took one just in case. I luckily didn’t need mine but some of the other audience members were not so lucky when throughout the play, water, blood and other bodily fluids were sprayed from the stage. Did I mention I loved this play!!!

I am so stoked to be having such an awesome Halloween season. And looking at my calendar, it’s just going to get better and better!!!

Markoff's Haunted Forest and Paranormal Activity
Posted On 10/05/2009 14:09:05

I just had my second incredible weekend of the Halloween season!!  Saturday night I visited Markoff's Haunted Forest in Dickerson, MD.  MHF is a truly unique and very elaborate Haunt experience that takes you on a trail through the woods with only the moonlight to guide your way.  Throughout the trail are several different scenes, mostly made up of shacks you must pass through that all had an intense amount of detail.  The majority of the actors were on point and did an excellent job.  One rule that has always been shoved down my throat while working or volunteering at a Haunt was “do not touch the customers.”  Well, at MHF, it seemed that some of the actors through that rule right out of the window.  Believe me, I AM NOT COMPLAINING, I loved it.  They did this in a very professional way that just intensified the experience and made it so much better.  I do not scare easily (I wish I did) so usually my experience at a Haunt is spent straggling behind the group checking out the scenery and watching others get scared, and sometimes working with the actors, helping them maneuver to scare others in my group.  But I must say the touching that the actors did at MHF really helped put me into the scene.  I would like to see other Haunts try and incorporate touching in some way to help with the overall experience.  Maybe it's just me?  Another cool aspect of MHF was that there were no lines and a ton of other haunting activities you can participate in while waiting to go through the forest including a Haunted Hayride, Haunted Bus, Fortune Tellers and more.  While entering the grounds you are given a sticker with a number on it, when your number is called it’s time to go through the forest.  In the meantime and also after you go through the forest, you can relax with friends around 3 huge bonfires while lounging on benches and chairs carved out of huge trees. I would definitely recommend taking a trip through Markoff’s Haunted Forest. http://markoffshauntedforest.com/introx.html

After the Haunt, I headed down to Washington DC to catch a midnight screening of the much hyped and highly anticipated film, “Paranormal Activity.”  It was more than just a new film but an entire experience.  This was only the second weekend for the film and it had only been released in about 30 cities and had sold out in almost every city it was showing in.  DC was no different.  The theatre was screening the film at midnight in four separate theatres which all sold out.  The line just to get into the theatre was all the way out the door and down the sidewalk - pretty impressive for a midnight screening.  The film started somewhat slow but I feel it just helped add to the atmosphere and kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting for something else to happen.  Overall, “Paranormal Activity” is a really good film that I was happy to see in the theatre but I think it would have been a little more frightening if I had watched it at home, alone in the dark.  Either way it’s still a very freaky film.
