Sharing Halloween this year
Posted On 10/02/2008 20:18:32

Well since I am having Lap Band surgery on the 20th, I had to cancel my yard haunt this year.  I was kind of bummed but then I had an idea.  Once a month my mom and I pass out food for the elderly in our churches neighborhood.  So I thought why not share Halloween with all of them.  Now we have all nationalities that come, from Russian, Hispanic, Islanders, Phillipino, and many many more.  I was a little concerned about religious aspects, but the people there know me and my mom and I thought it would be fine.  So I brought in a few things and decorated around the sign in area.  I had a candy dish that grabs your hand when you go to get a piece of candy, and they LOVED IT!!!  There were smiles everywhere!!!!  I talked the other volunteers into dressing up too.  We had a lot of fun and it made up for not being able to have my own haunt.  I posted the pics up on my page if you care to take a gander.  Nothing fancy just some fun.

Happy Haunting everyone!!  I look forward to seeing what all of you have up your sleeves this year.  Wishing you all a fantasticly fun holiday!

No Halloween for me this year
Posted On 08/26/2008 14:30:12

I sadly have to say that there will be no yard haunt for me this year.  My hubby just had a mild heart attack and surgery to have a stint put in.  He's fine by the way.  Just a few lifestyle changes and all will be back to normal for him.  I am rapidly approaching having Lap Band surgery, hopfully before Halloween, and I am going to have to be taking care of my mom and sister here pretty soon.  So I am going to have to take care of me and my family, so Halloween will have to wait until next year.  Besides, Halloween is on Saturday next year!!!  This way my hubby and I can finally check out some of our friends haunts and the ones around Sacramento.  Hint hint....anyone have a haunt to check out let me know!!!  Now I can create without rushing.  So everyone, post all of your videos, and photos so I can live Halloween through you all.

Happy Haunting....Build on!!!

Working on some new stones
Posted On 08/13/2008 15:00:31

Well I have once again procrastinated until August with a years worth of work to do for Halloween.  *Sigh*  But I have been working on some new tombstones.  I know the photos are kind of hard to see since they are not painted yet, but they are a start.  The kokopelli one is for my sister-in-law who works for the State for pesticide regulation.  And Amber's tomb well.....is for Amber, a friend of mine.  Hee hee.  I am also working on one (no photos yet) that is hopefully in the shape of wings (sort of) for another friend.  It however is deeming more difficult than expected.  So let me know what you think and if there should be any improvements.  All thoughts are welcome.

Haunt on everyone

Lettin' the dust fly!!!

Heh heh heh...me make big mess!!!

Well last weekend I decided to start to carve some of my tombstones.  I was kind of having a hard time due to the fact that the garage was freezing!!!  It made for some good squiglly lines. lol!  So here are some of the ones I started on.  There are more but the batteries in the camera were dying.  So let me know what you think.  Any feedback is very appreciated and helpful!!

Above is an old white styrofoam one I had laying around that I painted with spatter paint then carved it.  This one also happens to be for my sister.  I actually did this one last year but did some touch up's to it for this year.

This one is one I carved for a very good friend of mine.  And yes her last name is "Frinchaboy"  Yeah she had some fun with that name in high school!

This one is made for my mom.  She is an animal lover like I am and at one point was taking care of 11 stray cats.  We finally got homes for most of them but she still ended up with two.  The tombstone reads:

Ardel Briggs   10 31 1937    2 21 2000

She was an old lady who lived in the stickes who took in feral cats that gave her the fits.  They over ran the house and were such a pain that they drove her quite deeply insane.

This one I am making for a Airborne buddy of my hubbys.  As you can see the scrolls are carved seperately, they will have more carving done on them to make them look more like scrolls.  The top is also carved seperately the center of the top piece will be carved out and an ARMY coin will be placed dead center.  His name is done with all individual carved pieces so they are raised then in the center of the stone his death date will be carved into the stone, then a raised carved piece of the Airborne emblem will be just below.  Then below that, carved in the stone will read:  Kill 'em all    Let God sort 'em out.

So it looks like I will be doing some more carving this weekend too.  Wish me luck...it's supposed to be cold again this weekend!  I hope you like 'em.

Freak Show Banners
Posted On 01/16/2008 19:34:14

Okay, I have decided to expand on my dark circus theme this year.  I am going to use just the front end of my garage to hand out candy but I'm going to make it look like the front of a Coney Island Freak Show.  You won't see the freaks just the banners (maybe, we'll see how time and money goes).  But here are some of the banners I would like to recreate.

And there are many more!!!  So what do ya think?

Crowd control

I have been throwing this delima around for a couple years now.  How do I keep TOT's from mobbing my poor mother passing out candy.

My yard haunt is not one you can walk through.  The front yard has a lawn area in front of the house and porch, then the driveway, then off to the side is a small lawn area that I also decorate.  My mom usually sits at the corner of the porch by the garage to hand out the candy.  With our numbers growing to hopfully over 400-500 this year, I can't think of a good way to keep the kids from bunching up.  We get large groups of kids coming up together and it is hard to keep track of the ones who try and double dip.  I have thought about putting up some lines that they have to go through one coming up to the candy and the other leaving.  The only thing is that people like to stand and look at everything I have in the yard and then things bunch up and I have mobbing again.

My latest idea is to have my garage open and block off most of it but have it so people can mingle and look on the driveway but to get the candy they have to enter in a single line into the front of the garage then back out to the driveway.

What do you think?  I am open to any help anyone can give me.  PLEASE!!!!

Halloween 2007
Posted On 11/01/2007 15:48:14

Well Halloween has come and gone.  Where does the time go?

This was a hard Halloween for me this year.  Due to some medical complications and family matters, I was unable to create my usual haunt.  Even after half of the items were purchased and plans were made.  So I thought that this would be a great time to go check out some other haunts.  Unfortunately, I caught a bug that would not let go, so those plans were out too.  I was at a point that I was going to just put a wheelbarrow out front full of candy with a sign that says "Trick or Treat, help yourself but please leave the wheelbarrow".  But I got thinking about all the kids that love coming to the yard (I'm the only one that decorates on the block), and I just couldn't let them down.  Lets face it, Halloween is for the kids (no matter what the age).  So a week before Halloween I started thinking about what to put out.  All of my decorations were stored for the year.  So I pulled out some skeletons and such and just decorated my front porch.  It was kind of cutesy (not really my style) but it was for the kids.

My mom came over to help pass out candy while the hubby played PR man for me to tell everyone that they have to come back next year for the full on haunt.  I was surprised on how many people remembered my house and what I had out last year.  They liked this year and the fact that I decorated (they still said I had the best house in town) and are really looking forward to next year.  *As I puff up my chest in pride*  Although we only had about a hundred kids, which is far less than most years of 400, I had fun.  I went from dreding Halloween this year to being really glad I did a little something.

My mind is already racing on additions to this years plans that fell through.  So next year I'll be ready.  I just hope I don't go too overboard....like that would ever happen...hee hee.

I hope everyone's Halloween went well.  I look forward to seeing what I missed out on.  Until the mood strikes again...Happy Haunting!

102 days to go and I can't get started
Posted On 07/21/2007 17:11:38

I'm not sure what is going on here but I can not seem to get off my can and get going on my props this year.  I have so much to do and so little time to do it.  But everytime I think okay I'm going to build today, I end up looking at the plans and just no doing anything!  Is anyone else having this problem?!?!?!  I can't seem to get into Halloween yet this year.  Maybe I need to sit down this weekend and rent (yeah right...more like take off the shelf) some good old horror movies and just force myself into it like the happy cabin in Addams Family Values.  Although watching the Brady movie may throw me over the edge faster.  I just am frusterated!!  If anyone has an motivational anything please let me know.  Other than a stiff kick in the can!  I hope everyone else is fairing better than I.

Welcome my babies

Oh happy day!  The UPS stork brought me my new babies!!  I am so excited!  Now that I can see their faces, I can start creating their bodies!  I am still lagging on my paper mache projects, need to get off my can and get messy!  Anyway without further adieu, won't you take a peek at my babies.
